JDM Traditional Japanese Car Nissan FairladyZ

The Fairlady Z is a coupe-type sports car manufactured and sold by Nissan.
Nissan's flagship model along with the GT-R, known as a sports car representing Japan.

The origin of the car name is that the president of Nissan at the time was impressed by the Broadway musical "My Fair Lady". Also, Fairlady means "a lady, a beautiful young lady" and Z means "ultimate, possibilities and dreams for the unknown." The car was named after seeking such sophisticated beauty.

The 1st Fairlady Z was released in 1969, replacing its predecessor model, the convertible Datsun Fairlady. It was a big hit, especially in the North American market, because it had specs comparable to European luxury GTs and an attractive style at a low price. Adopting a long nose and short deck style, it was a wider and more livable model than the 1st generation.

The 240Z equipped with the previous model's 2.4-liter, 150ps engine played an active role in numerous Motorsports scenes, including the World Rally Championship. And this car model was produced for 10 years as Nissan's image leader car. In racing, in 1971, the "Datsun 240Z" entered the Monte Carlo Rally. It finished 5th overall (2nd in its class), and in the Safari Rally, it won the overall, class, and team wins.

The 2nd generation appeared in 1978. While inheriting the concept of the 1st generation, it has been remodeled as a unique sports car that is easier to use: sharp styling by pursuing aerodynamics, ensuring a comfortable living space, and enhancement of maintenance specifications. In addition to the existing 2,000cc series, a new 2,800cc series was added, all of which used an engine with an electronically controlled fuel injection system (Nissan EGI). It was the first Japanese car to have a T-bar roof specification, and while it had the comfort of a closed body, it was a model where you could enjoy the openness of an open car by removing the hatch glass.

In 1983, while inheriting the traditional Z concept of long nose and short deck, the 3rd generation appeared with an improved exterior shape with an emphasis on aerodynamic performance. A major feature was the use of parallel rise-up headlamps that moved parallel up and down, exposing part of the lens even when the lights were off. The engine was changed from the previous in-line 6-cylinder L-type to a new generation V-type 6-cylinder engine, and 2.0L and 3.0L with turbo were installed.

The 4th generation was introduced in 1989. The long nose and short deck inherited from the previous generation have been revised, and a new wide and low design has been adopted. It was a model that aimed to be the perfect super sports car in terms of style and performance. The body size has increased in width, and has been changed from the previous 5-number size to the 3-number size. Due to the collapse of the Japanese economic bubble, sales of the Fairlady Z ended in December 2000.

The 5th generation was revived in 2002 for the first time in two years as one of the symbols of the Nissan revival plan after Carlos Ghosn became CEO. There are two body types, a coupe and his roadster, both of which are only two-seaters. Unfortunately, the 2by2 that was set in the successive Fairlady Z has been abolished with this model change. The engine installed is only a 3.5L V-type 6-cylinder DOHC naturally aspirated engine, and the output has been improved to 313ps in the final model.

In 2008, the first full model change since the revival was carried out, and the 6th generation appeared. In order to express the "long nose" that was lost in the 4th generation, the wheelbase was shortened by 100mm to reproduce the original Z body style. The engine is equipped with a 3.7-liter V-type 6-cylinder engine, and the maximum output is 336PS, which boasts the maximum power of the Fairlady Z series.

The 7th generation Fairlady Z will be unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2022 in 2022, and at the same time, a special edition car "Proto Spec" limited to 240 units will be announced. It features a traditional FR sports car style, and its long nose and low center of gravity rear stance make it a silhouette reminiscent of successive models.

I hope that Nissan will continue to make valuable FR sports cars.
