The Toyota Crown is a luxury car of the "Toyota" that was born in January 1955. It is a model with a history of more than 60 years from the first generation to the 15th generation.
The car name is derived from "CROWN" which means the crown, and the design of the crown is also adopted for the emblem.
As the catchphrase of "Someday Crown", the customer target was initially the middle generation, but it has become a popular model from the zero crown to the younger generation.
The first Crown was born in 1955. At that time, the Japanese automobile industry was immature and inferior not only in performance but also in price to foreign cars, so many Japanese automobile manufacturers have formed alliances with overseas manufacturers to produce Japanese cars overseas.
Under such circumstances, Toyota chose domestic production, and in January 1955, the "Toyopet Crown" was introduced.
Also, at that time, it was rare for individuals to purchase cars, and the main sales destination was a taxi company. Therefore, there were two models of Toyopet Crown, the Toyopet Crown RS type for individuals and the Toyopet Master RR type for taxi companies.
Also, because it is convenient to use in a taxi, the door of the rear seat opens backward, and the door with double doors was adopted.
In 1962, a modern second-generation model is born. With the addition of the Crown Eight, which is the first Japanese passenger car to be equipped with a V8 engine, we will begin to move on to luxury routes.
In 1971, a familiar model appeared under the nickname of the 4th generation "whale". From the conventional horizontal tone, a spindle-shaped body composed of gently curved surfaces was adopted, and although it was a novel design at that time, it was unpopular with the middle layer.
Introduced in 1974, the 5th generation has a boxy style, emphasizing elegance and luxury. It was a model that actively adopted challenging technologies such as the world's first 4-speed AT with overdrive.
The 7th generation model, which was born in 1983, has an edgy straight-line exterior with the catchphrase "Someday Crown", and has become popular as a luxury personal sedan with a perfect balance of stylishness and luxury.
In 2003, the 12th generation model, commonly known as the "Zero Crown," will be born. As the name suggests, the platform was redesigned because it was "developed from scratch", and the level of driving increased at once, making it a popular model for the younger generation.
The engine has been renewed from the in-line 6-cylinder engine installed in the Crown for many years to a V-type 6-cylinder engine, and the newly developed N platform has been adopted.
The 14th generation model, which appeared in 2012, has undergone a major overhaul of the exterior, interior, and powertrain with the catch phrase "CROWN Re BORN". For the exterior, a very bold design of the front grille was adopted, and at the time of its debut, it became a big topic with pros and cons. I was also surprised that a shocking pink crown was prepared.
In 2015, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Crown's birth, models with limited body colors "blue" and "young grass color" were released for a limited time and became a hot topic.
In 2018, the 15th generation Crown was launched. The names "Athlete," "Royal," and "Majesta" have been abolished, three engines have been prepared, and there are four grades, "B," "S," "G," and "RS."
In addition, Toyota's first FR model adopts a new platform developed based on TNGA to improve performance, reduce costs, improve production efficiency and globalize.
As Toyota's flagship model, the Crown has taken on numerous adventures and challenges in order to achieve cutting-edge technology and performance. I am looking forward to seeing how the Crown will evolve in the future.
