Daihatsu has introduced minor updates to the COPEN, a lightweight open-top sports car that first debuted in 2002. The name COPEN originates from "KOPEN" (Kei Open), with the "K" replaced by a "C" to represent "Compact Car." The first-generation model used the mixed-case spelling "Copen," while the second generation adopted the fully capitalized "COPEN." The first-generation model featured a 660cc inline-4 turbocharged JB-DET engine and was the first Kei car equipped with an electrically operated hydraulic retractable roof (Active Top). The current second-generation COPEN, introduced in 2014, incorporates a newly developed D-Frame chassis structure and the Dress-Formation system, allowing interchangeable exterior panels. The engine remains a 660cc inline-3 DOHC turbo, delivering 64PS and 92Nm of torque. It is paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed CVT with Super Active Shift, while retaining an FF drivetrain layout. The signature electrically retractable roof can be opened or closed in approximately 20 seconds at the push of a button, with a luggage compartment still available when the roof is down.

The COPEN lineup features distinct exterior designs to suit various preferences. The COPEN Robe debuted as the base model, embodying a modern and lightweight design. The COPEN Cero brings a retro-modern aesthetic with round headlights reminiscent of the previous generation. The COPEN GR SPORT, developed in collaboration with Toyota’s GR (Gazoo Racing) division, is based on the "COPEN Robe S" and features an aggressively tuned design with enhanced body rigidity, suspension tuning, and dedicated shock absorbers. These refinements ensure a smooth yet firm ride with improved road contact. Additionally, a specially tuned electric power steering system enhances driving precision and responsiveness, delivering the lightweight sports car feel that allows for seamless driver control.
With this update, the XPLAY model has been discontinued, streamlining the COPEN lineup. Additionally, to comply with new safety regulations, rear parking sonar sensors (two sensors) have been added as standard equipment to improve rearward visibility when reversing.
Why not take a drive in the safer and more refined COPEN?
